Domain names this scam comes from.

The above example seems tied to tsnet-asia.com and tsnet-asia.org; unfortunately they have many domain names and it wouldn't be worth while to try to find them all, as they're most likely continuously getting new ones.

If you'd like to read more on this, here are a couple places I found that have good explanations as well.

SBS 2011 Update Status Unknown - Thursday, January 26, 2012

SBS 2011 Update Status is Unknown

Example of Update Status 'Unknown'Problem details: Small Business Server 2011 Console shows computers with an update status of 'Unknown' or 'Critical'.

I've found two things that cause this:
1. Required Group Policy Objects are not there;
2. Unknown status switches between workstations that don't have unique ids (cloned stations).

Details 1: Missing Group Policy Objects

Example of Update Services Not ReportingTo verify that update service policies are missing, manually check the update services for your domain.

Start>
All Programs>
Administrative Tools>
Windows Server Update Services

As you can see, when I checked mine, I was a little concerned that SBS was reporting update status 'ok' but apparently the updates weren't coming through the SBS. When I looked into it further, it appeared that SBS 2011 Console's update status is not based on the actual update status, but rather things like 'ping' and a few queries to Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Hence the reason why it says 'unknown' for the update status- because it can scan the computer but that computer isn't in WSUS and the console has no idea how to handle that situation.

If you can see that computers are not reporting to WSUS, and that new workstations aren't being added to the list, then you most likely have a GPO issue.

Solution: 1. Missing GPO for SBS 2011

Use the following Microsoft WSUS repair guide, skip to step 5 for the GPO repair process for WSUS.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg680316.aspx

If all goes well, your SBS 2011 console should start to look more normal (and be more reliable).Almost completely working SBS Update Status

What about cloned stations?

I'm still working on the solution for cloned stations, to save time- I had duplicated working stations over broken ones, and the duplicate ids confuse communication between wsus and the sbs console.

AT&T Confirm Appointment with "YES" not "CONFIRM" - Monday, November 14, 2011

at&t free msg: reply with word confirm

At&t appointment message won't confirm

As image to the right shows:
'AT&T Free Msg: Reply with the word "CONFIRM" to verify your -Uverse install appt. Out tech will...'
I thought it was strange because they told me that a Tech wouldn't need to show up, regardless, I kept getting a response back saying that it didn't recognize my response.

Reply with 'YES' not 'CONFIRM'

After realizing that 'Confirm' wasn't the correct answer, I tried 'yes' and it worked.

Why won't it work with 'CONFIRM'?

Purely speculating, they probably had a 'yes/no' response before but realized they didn't want people canceling appointments via text message (would be too easy for the user or technical problems with canceling appointments via text). So they had the message changed but didn't change the code that accepts your response.

Will this get fixed?

I'm not affiliated with AT&T in anyway, so I'm just speculating: a simple bug like this may have already been fixed. Also, there's the possibility that due to how big AT&T is: complaints that their 'verify appointment texts' don't work correctly never make it to the people that can do something about it. EG you tell a rep "hey, that text thing don't work right" and they respond "oh ok" and that's where the message ends as they assume its something that someone else will report and its not their job to fix that system.

incorrect syntax near 'nvarchar' must declare scalar variable - Monday, October 17, 2011

incorrect syntax near 'nvarchar' must declare scalar variable

While working with the built in update command, i had this error "incorrect syntax near 'nvarchar' must declare scalar variable".

Only Update seems affected

The delete, insert, and new rows all seemed to work fine, it was just the update command that was failing.

Solution

Check the SqlDataSource object for any fields you've pulled or renamed with spaces in them. An '_' Underscore will work fine, but doing a query like this "Select [somename] as [Some Name] FROM [names] WHERE [id]=@id" will result in the above error.

Other Fixes

Other fixes, that didn't work for me, is to rebuild the solution or copy the code and paste it into a new document and replace the old document with the new one.

OEM Hardware and Software - Tuesday, September 06, 2011

Original Equipment Manufacturer Explained

I've seen some confusion about OEM products not having software and little or no support given for OEM products. OEM, acronym for Original Equipment Manufacturer, is a type of purchasing option in which the purchaser agrees to provide support for the device. This allows for re-sellers or system builders to purchase software and equipment at a discount and package it with their own support or software.

What's Included with OEM

OEM hardware will typically contain just the base product.
OEM software will usually be a non-transferable license.

What isn't included with OEM

Typically:
OEM hardware will not have cables, accessories, drivers, or software required to use it.
OEM software will not have support, if you purchased OEM software- you are supposed to provide the support for it. An OEM operating system is usually a one-machine use, so if the computer breaks, you can't install it on a different computer.

Who is OEM intended for?

I've seen alot of 'OEM' appear in the retail market, this is misleading because while such products are cheaper than their retail counterparts- they don't have the same support and may not even have the software you need to use them. OEM should be purchased by computer enthusiast or system builders, but not the general public.

Summary

Be aware that OEM is not the same as RETAIL. OEM is just the base product from the manufacturer where as Retail will have what you need to use the product. OEM is cheaper because it doesn't have what is included in the Retail packaging.

Web Server 2008 FTP not working - Thursday, August 04, 2011

Server 2008 (or SBS 2011) FTP not working

As mentioned here http://connect.microsoft.com/WindowsServerFeedback/feedback/details/524831/default-ftp-firewall-port-21-rule-is-broken-in-windows-2008-r2

When you first setup ftp on server 2008 (or web server 2008 in my case) the default firewall rule seems broken. If you delete recreate the rule it seems to fix the problem- but there is a better way.

Fix for Broken FTP Server 2008

Run command prompt with admin rights and run the following:
sc sidtype ftpsvc unrestricted

Restart the ftp service with these commands:
net stop ftpsvc
net start ftpsvc

Now you should be able to connect to your server 2008 ftp sites.

Bottle Necking - Wednesday, August 03, 2011

What is a Bottle Neck

In regards to computer hardware, and playing games or using software, you will sometimes hear that the computer goes slow because of a bottle neck. A bottle neck is essentially where the computer is slowing down at because its receiving more data than it can handle. Like the term, "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link", likewise, "a computer is only as fast as its slowest component".bottlenecking, 3 streams of 0s and 1s enter, 1 exits

How to spot a Bottle Neck

When you find out what you're doing that causes the computer to slow down, you've discovered or are very close to discovering where there is a bottle neck on your computer.

Video Card

If you play a game and it runs slower the higher the graphics, your video card isn't fast enough so the rest of your computer is just waiting on it. Your processor sometimes will pickup the slack, which causes your processor to become a bottle neck.

Processor

When a computer has alot of calculations to do, but it can't handle them- programs tend to run really slow. The computer usually saves those calculations in it's memory for future/immediate reference.

Memory (Ram)

As you open programs, they pull their information from the hard drive and store it in memory. Memory was invented because hard drives were too slow and so they needed a place they could quickly access data from. When you use too much memory though, your computer stores the information on your hard drive.

Hard Drive

This is typically what slows down the rest of the computer. Adding memory helps programs that are already running to run a bit faster. However, when the hard drive slows down, the rest of the computer sits there waiting on it. If the computer seems slower over time, and you've done your basic maintenance, then your hard drive is slowing you down.

Upgrading doesn't always speed everything up

Upgrading certain components will increase speed in certain areas of the computer. Lets walk through the process of how your components are used.

When you open up a graphic intensive game, your computer reads from the hard drive and loads the game into memory. The game uses the processor to make sure that the game is loaded right and it starts some intro movie. When you load a map on the game, again, it reads it from the hard drive, puts it in memory, and then uses the processor to understand the coding of the map, and then it uses the video card to display that information on your screen.

If you increase your hard drive speed, you'll notice that loading the game, and loading game levels will be faster- but it won't allow you to have better graphics and the speed of the actually game play will most likely be the same. If you increase the memory, then you decrease how often the game has to look back at the hard drive for information. Increasing the processor speed usually won't increase load time (unless you already have a really fast hard drive), it would increase the game play, but not necessarily the graphics. If you got a better graphics card then you would have better graphics, but the load time of the game, and the ingame play would usually be the same (unless your processor was picking up slack from your older video card and is now running how it should).

SBS 2011 Restart Exchange Information Store - Thursday, June 09, 2011

Why Restart the SBS 2011 Exchange Information Store

If you're on vmware and having trouble with the time changing by an hour every so often; then you'll need to restart the information store on the sbs everytime you fix the time. Otherwise users will keep getting prompted to put in their credentials (which to the exchange server it looks like they're connecting from an hour in the future or past).

Exchange Information Store Stuck on Stopping

Sometimes the service will 'timeout' while restarting and get stuck on 'stopping'. If you're like me, and you don't want to restart the whole server to fix it- you've probably tried forcing the service to stop. If you try to force the service to stop you will get an "access denied" because that service is being run by the 'local service' account which means no access for you.

How to kill the service anyways

Open up task manager, don't bother with the services tab, click on the processes tab. Terminate the store.exe process. Don't see that process? Click on "Show processes from all users" in the bottom left corner. If that still gives you trouble, try sysinternals process explorer run with admin rights.

Don't forget to get the service running!

After you force the service to stop, it should restart automatically, but if it didn't- then open the 'services.msc' and start the 'Microsoft Exchange Information Store'.

Working with IT Professionals - Tuesday, May 24, 2011

What Type of Person Works With Technology

Kids Working On ComputerWhile no two people are the same, there are certain aspects of Information Technology that attract certain personalities. By understanding some key points of technology and those personalities that are attracted to it you will understand:
  • Why technology isn't for everyone.
  • How people can tell a geek from a non-geek.
  • How to work with difficult technology experts.
This blog post if based off of my personal experience as a computer expert, working with other computer experts, and working between the realms of computer experts and non-computer experts. You should not use this as the sole basis for any decision making.

Technology Is Irresistable

Power SuppliesTechnology is rapidly changing and is becoming more and more a part of society. Its changing so fast, that if you go to a 4 year college to learn about technology, by the time you graduate, everything you learned your first year is obsolete. The usefulness of technology is accelerating and the cost benefit it provides is also increasing. What would cost $2000 three years ago now cost $600, but what cost $2000 today is about 6 times more powerful than what we had 3 years ago. Inside of a Computer

Personality That Loves Technology

Children Looking at SchematicsTechnology is rapidly changing, requires strong problem solving skills, does not require good human interaction skills, and requires curiosity or the desire to try new things. One would think that the only thing you need then is an Analytical Thinker, but I've noticed some other traits that stand out. From my experience another key indicator is a person that was thought to of had ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) but were never diagnosed with it and it's calmed down as they've gotten older. An important part that attracts Analytical Thinkers is the ability to be Introvertic when working with technology and because computers are 100% logical (as opposed to emotional).

Why the IT Guy is so Stressed

Children Pulling On BoxBad stress can be caused by creating an influence that is contrary to the personality. For instance, some people can do the same thing over and over again, but if you ask someone who is curious and wants to learn new things to become repetitive, you will get an unhappy IT guy. Also, introverts get drained when they're around people- so the more the IT Guy has to work with the end users the more difficult it becomes for them to work with the end user. In my experience, IT Professionals have more difficulty working with one person that has 10 problems then working with 5 people that have 2 problems each. Also, Analytical thinkers need to gather accurate facts about the problem before giving a solution, so giving non-specific data with a request like "It's broke how do I fix it?" really bothers them. It still bothers me when a user will close an error message box without reading it- just because I don't think I could ever do such a thing and don't understand how other people can.

How to Work with IT Professionals

True IT Professionals are very smart and like to solve problems; but social skills isn't always their strong suit. Just keep in mind that they do not hold anything personal against you, they just rather play on the computers then talk with people. Also, if you find yourself having a lot of computer problems and the IT Guy seems stressed, don't worry about it- it's not you as an individual that is causing the stress, its the situation and sometimes just can't be avoided.

Why Proper Crimping is Important - Thursday, May 19, 2011

Example of cat5 bad and good crimping

Why Proper Crimping Matters

The above image shows 2 cat5 network cables. The top one was done by someone who should read this blog post, the lower one was the correction I made to his work. The top network cable caused the network to slow down and caused massive network errors. The bottom cable made the network work properly. To understand why this happens you need to have a basic understanding of magnetic fields.

Brief Explination of Interference

Magnetic Field InterferenceWhen electricity moves through a wire it generates a magnetic field that rotates.  You can determine the rotation of the field by making a fist with your right hand and giving a thumbs up- your thumb is pointing the direction of flow and your fingers are curved in the direction of field rotation. if you have 2 wires running side by side, the field they generate will interfer with eachother causing resistance to the electricity trying to pass through the cable.

How the Inteference is Avoided

Magnetic Field can Encourage FlowBy having one wire flow the opposite direction, the magnetic fields they generate flow with eachother. This effectively cancels out the interference caused by the magnetic field. Make the pairs of cable twist around eachother and you have a nice uniform signal that is no longer fighting against itself.

How A Network Cable Should Terminate

Where Crimping MattersOther than making sure you have it wired correctly, you need to make sure that the wires reach the front of the RJ-45 Head and that the wire jacket makes it into where you see the plastic dip in the head.

Now go, and wire cat5's correctly.
